Class D-2 No. 8: CWC
They're gonna keep it pretty simple at CWC this season, and why not, with both lines back and one of the better quarterbacks in Class D-2 football. In all head coach Tom Thramer returns six starters on both sides of the ball from last season's 6-4 team which won a playoff game.
"We return our entire offensive and defensive lines and our best playmaker. We should be a very strong running team and will work to become better in the passing game," says Thramer, who enters his fourth season at CWC. "We should be solid against the run but we need better secondary play. We will have some young kids step up but our overall goal is to get better every week."
CWC will compete in the D2-5 district along with Osmond, Randolph, St. Mary's, defending D-2 runner-up Stuart and Wausa.
Huskerland's 2013 Class D-1 Diamond in the Rough, everybody will know Jayle Hinkle before 2014 is over. Really, they will.
Only a junior, QB Brenden Pelster (5-11, 180) is a superb dual threat, last year rushing for 1,285 yards and 13 touchdowns and passing for 843 yards and 16 touchdowns. Senior Levi Koenig (5-10, 165) is the team's most veteran running back while senior Tanner Tracy (6-0, 165) returns at end, with sophomore letterman Chase Hoffschneider (6-3, 180) another option.
Senior all-state candidate Jayle Hinkle (6-1, 250) is an overpowering presence up front and will be joined by seniors Zach Haburchak (5-11, 200) and Cody Ramsey (6-3, 285) to give the Renegades the makings of a great offensive line. Senior Brant Pavel (6-1, 230) is another experienced hand in the offensive line.
Pelster (team-best 110 tackles)and Koenig return at linebacker while Tracy will lead the secondary. Hinkle (86 tackles, 10 TFL, 8 sacks) is basically unblockable and leads a deep D-line that will include Haburchak, Ramsey, Pavel and Hoffschneider.
Pelster is also an outstanding punter, averaging 36.9 yards per attempt in 2013.
Shoes to Fill
Gone is thousand-yard running back Greg Olson, who was also second on the team in tackles, as well as leading receiver Steven Marcellus.
Must Step Up
An improved passing game and better defense against the pass could push the Rengades over the top.
