Practice Insider: Barkley doesn't fit the mold
Pete Carroll has Malcolm Gladwell's "The Outliers" in his library, and when the Trojan head coach talked about someone accelerating past he piers, he related it to one of his players.
And by calling Matt Barkley an "outlier," he paid he freshman quarterback a pretty strong compliment.
"Malcolm Gladwell wrote a book about outliers. He talks about guys that, through their development and upbringing, at times they can accelerate past other people because of the amount of time, the makeup around them, the support group," Carroll said. "Whatever it is, he's off the charts."
It wasn't there with Mark Sanchez, John David Booty or Matt Leinart.
"We're nowhere near where we've been before," Caroll said. "He's just way ahead."
